On Tuesday 7 April the Fair Work Bill received Royal Assent, which means that it officially became law, and will commence on 1 July 2009.
Practical changes include new unfair dismissal provisions and new rules about small business employees having access to the jurisdiction.
There will also be new rules about union right of entry and a number of different industrial bodies will be replaced by Fair Work Australia.
From 1 January 2010, all current federal awards and Notional Agreements Preserving State Awards (NAPSAs) will be replaced by Modern Awards, and the Fair Pay & Conditions Standard will be replaced by the National Employment Standards. All awards are in the process of being modernised.
